Manci Zhu is a New York and Shenzhen Based Designer. Drawn to movements such as Land Art and Brutalism, as well as sound design and indigenous fashion, she finds expressiveness, solemnity, anger and passion in highly condensed forms. Scarring, rebirth and collapse are central to her narrative. Her work is a journey of sentimentality and healing, aiming to connect with the audience. Her creative process strives to transform ideas into unconventional pattern making, and she designs and ideates by continually seeking different methods, such as Subtraction Cutting. Guided by synesthesia experience, she has integrated sentimental music experience and expresses through the body’s relationship with space. Growing up in a multicultural background, she reflects her ambivalence towards urban life. She sees her garments as metaphors. Her thesis collection depicts modern life and suffering as an infinite pilgrimage, drawing comparisons between the two.
