Australian designer Michael Yuxiao Zhang weaves expressions of the camp and wondrous within an ode to the queer immigrant experience. Paying homage to the narratives of the Asian diaspora through textiles of universality, his work is dreamt from the workwear of his family’s working class background as an unabashed recollection of his past. Musing upon queer poetry, art and history through a blend of couture cuts, drapes and scale, Michael chooses to highlight absurdity within classism by peering into a world of his own reverie. By questioning garments as objects of upwards mobility, Michael hopes to deconstruct sartorial structures of status and class, connecting the hopeful and transformative qualities of inclusive dress as manners of celebration, musal inspiration and a boundless communal force.
Michael is a past winner of the Australian Army Defense Award, NSW Arts Grant and current recipient of the BFA Fashion Scholarship Award 23.
